Liver cancer may not be as high profile as other types of cancer in terms of awareness in the United States, but it is the fifth most common type of cancer in the world today. While Americans have seen the support of research and awareness of other types of cancers, the rate at which Americans are dying of liver cancer is on the rise. Therefore, September has been established as National Liver Cancer Awareness Month in an effort bring attention to this disease.
An emerald green ribbon is used as the symbol of liver cancer and these ribbons can be purchased to help support the American Cancer Society in its medical research into the four different types of primary liver cancer. Most liver cancer starts in other areas of the body before attacking the liver, in fact, only two percent of primary liver cancer starts in the liver. As we continue to raise awareness for other types of cancer, people need to be educated on liver cancer as well, and should support research into curing this horrible disease.
